The Lake County Forest Preserves is celebrating Oak Awareness Month with two OAKtober events highlighting the importance of native oaks.

The popular OAKtober Celebration: Native Tree & Shrub Sale takes place from 9 am–noon, Saturday, October 3 at the North Bay Pavilion within Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville.

“Fall is the perfect season to plant,” said Director of Education Alyssa Firkus. “Cooler weather and slowing plant growth mean less stress and a better chance for strong root development before winter.”

The sale features a diverse selection of species well-suited to local conditions, including oaks, sycamore, hawthorn, dogwoods and hazelnut.

OAKtober is a statewide initiative celebrating these keystone species in the Chicago region and Illinois.

Native plants are adapted to Lake County’s climate and soil, making them easier and more affordable to care for. They provide vital food and shelter for native birds, butterflies and other wildlife.

“Together we can transform our neighborhoods into connected habitats,” said Forest Preserves President Jessica Vealitzek. “Every native plant we add to public and private properties creates habitat for wildlife and strengthens the natural systems that sustain us.”

Proceeds from the sale benefit Forest Preserves environmental education programs and events.

Sip & Stroll at Ryerson

Oaks take on a different role at the Preservation Foundation’s OAKtober Sip & Stroll on the same day at Ryerson Conservation Area in Riverwoods. The Foundation, the charitable partner of the Lake County Forest Preserves, is hosting two sessions from 1–2:30 pm and 3:30–5 pm.

The 21+ event explores the connection between oaks and whiskey and bourbon production with a talk and tasting led by representatives from Journeyman Distillery and Whiskey Acres Distilling Co. Journeyman is headquartered in Three Oaks, Michigan and Whiskey Acres hails from DeKalb, Illinois.

Participants will then head into Ryerson’s designated old-growth forest for a guided hike. Guests will receive a tasting glass, three tastings from each distillery and light bites. Registration is required by September 25 at LCFPD.org/sip.

All proceeds benefit the Preservation Foundation’s Every Acre Strong community fundraising campaign.
