History Symposium

2020 Submission Guidelines

Deadline: September 1

The Lake County History Symposium is an annual gathering of people interested in the history of Lake County, Illinois. Professional, amateur, and student historians are invited to submit proposals for presentations at the Symposium.

This year’s theme is Fun & Games: Sports and Leisure in Lake County, and presentations should reflect this theme.

This year’s Symposium will take place virtually on Zoom, both Wednesday, November 4 from 6:30 – 8 pm and Saturday, November 7 from 10 – 11:30 am. Different presentations will be featured each day.

  • Presentations are sought that share original historical research on the current theme within the following guidelines:
  • Presentations should be approximately 20-30 minutes long (30 min. max) with time for questions after.
  • Presentations should include a visual presentation, such as a PowerPoint, that can be shared over Zoom.
  • To submit a presentation proposal, please fill out the online form found below by or before September, 1, 2020. Early submissions are encouraged!
  • Be sure to also attach a resume for each participant and a description of the major primary and secondary sources used in your research.
  • Dunn Museum staff will review submissions as they come in and will get back to you as soon as possible to let you know if your submission has been accepted.

Please note:

  • Indicate on the submission form if you prefer to share your presentation on Wednesday, November 4 or Saturday, November 7.
  • If your submission is accepted, Dunn Museum staff will contact you to set up a time for a Zoom practice session, in advance of the Symposium, to make sure you are familiar and comfortable with the technology. During the Symposium, a Museum staff person will act as the virtual host, so presenters will only be responsible for sharing their presentation and answering questions, which staff will help facilitate.
  • This year’s virtual format is new to us all. If you have any questions, please reach out to skuester@lcfpd.org.
