8th Annual Lake County History Symposium

Eat, Drink and Be Merry: The History of Food and Hospitality in Lake County


The Lake County History Symposium is an annual gathering of people interested in the history of Lake County, Illinois. Professional, amateur and student historians are invited to submit proposals for presentations at the Symposium. The Symposium will take place virtually on Zoom, Thursday, January 5 and January 19, 2023 from 7–9 pm.

This year’s theme is Eat, Drink and be Merry: The History of Food and Hospitality in Lake County. Topics may include the history of a family cookbook, development of well known-restaurants, discussion of a specific food or recipe, or stories of communities holding special banquets. Each day will feature three different presentations. Breakout rooms will be open at the end of the presentations for participants to ask questions and engage in dialogue.

Submission Guidelines

Professional, amateur and student historians are invited to submit proposals.

The Symposium will take place virtually on Zoom, Thursday, January 5 and January 19, 2023 from 7–9 pm.

This year’s theme is Eat, Drink and be Merry: The History of Food and Hospitality in Lake County.

Each day will feature three different presentations. Breakout rooms will be open at the end of the presentations for viewers to ask questions and engage in dialogue.

  1. Presentations should include original historical research on the theme.
  2. Presentations should be approximately 20-30 minutes long (30 min. max) with additional time for questions.
  3. Presentations should include a visual presentation, such as a PowerPoint or video.
  4. Be sure to attach a resume for each participant and a description of the major primary and secondary sources used in your research. Please remember to attach any supporting documentation.
  5. Dunn Museum staff will review submissions as they come in and will reply to let you know if your submission has been accepted.
  6. If your submission is accepted, Dunn Museum will contact you with additional information on the Symposium.
