Registration is now open for the 40th and final season of Halloween Hikes at Ryerson Conservation Area in Riverwoods.

The event takes place Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24. Hikes begin every half hour from 5:30–8:30 pm. Registration is required. The cost is $10 for Lake County residents and $12 for nonresidents.

Participants follow a candlelit trail through the woods, stopping along the way to watch nature themed skits performed by Forest Preserves educators. The complete experience lasts about 90 minutes and includes approximately 1.5 miles of walking.

Designed to entertain rather than frighten, the program offers seasonal fun for all ages, including preschoolers. The evening ends beside a campfire, weather permitting, with apple cider and donuts.

For decades Halloween Hikes has combined environmental education, theater and humor in an outdoor setting. Educators have introduced generations of participants to the natural world through original skits featuring costumed characters.

“As we celebrate 40 seasons of Halloween Hikes, we’re also looking ahead,” Education Director Alyssa Firkus said. “Our educators are exploring new ways to create memorable experiences, reach more people and connect families with nature while keeping our programs sustainable for years to come.”
