Free Snowmobile Safety Course Offered

Interested in snowmobiling? Ranger Police from the Lake County Forest Preserves are holding a FREE snowmobile safety education course from 8 am to 5 pm Saturday, January 14, at the Operations and Public Safety Facility, 19808 W. Grand Ave., Lake Villa. Registration is required. To reserve spot, call 847-968-3404 from 6:30 am to 3 pm on weekdays.

Completing eight hours of instruction and passing a written exam allows youth ages 12 and older to earn a state of Illinois Certificate of Competency so they can operate a snowmobile on their own. Minimum age for the safety course is 11; 12 for certification.

In addition to teaching basic safety principles, the course is designed to instill the proper attitude of respect for others and the environment. Development of this respect along with use of proper safety procedures are essential to enjoy snowmobiling as a recreational activity.
