Winter evenings are getting a little brighter at Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville.

The Lake County Forest Preserves is introducing a free, family-friendly evening walk, with live music and seasonal treats on select Fridays.

Beginning December 1 and continuing through March 14, festive lights will illuminate the South Bay Trail Loop, a paved, 0.7-mile route around the lake’s South Bay near the Visitors Center and Millennia Plaza.

“Winter is a wonderful time to experience the Forest Preserves, and we’re excited to offer families a new reason to get outside after dark,” said Director of Facilities Dan Stearns. “Even a short walk can be a refreshing break during the colder months.”

The illuminated trail will remain open until 9 pm daily. Forest Preserves police officers will patrol the area.

Live music and fire pits will add to the experience on three Fridays, December 4, 11 and 18.

From 6 to 7:30 pm, visitors can gather in Millennia Plaza for free performances featuring popular hits, original songs and holiday favorites.

Live Music Lineup

  • December 4–Haley Klinkhammer: A Kenosha singer-songwriter known for acoustic pop, original songs and covers of popular hits.
  • December 11–Jessica Brown: Performs acoustic favorites from the 1960s to today, reimagined on the ukulele.
  • December 18–Maggie and Mark: A duo performing classic rock, pop and country favorites from the 1970s to today.

Relish Café will be on-site during the three Friday music events selling hot chocolate, hot apple cider, spiked cider, popcorn, cider donuts and cookies. S’mores kits with roasting sticks, marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate will also be available for purchase.

Admission and parking are free. Enter Independence Grove at 16400 W. Buckley Road in Libertyville and follow signs to Parking Lot A, near the Visitors Center and Millennia Plaza.

Dogs and other pets are not permitted at Independence Grove. Service animals are welcome.
