Celebrate two milestones in one afternoon at Ryerson Conservation Area!

Join us to celebrate the legacy of Ethel Untermyer, founder of the Lake County Forest Preserves, on what would have been her 101st birthday. The event also marks Ryerson Conservation Area's induction into the Old-Growth Forest Network (OGFN) as Lake County's second designated old-growth forest.

1 pm: Gather near the entrance of the Ryerson Welcome Center to hear remarks from OGFN and Forest Preserves leadership, then enjoy a one-mile guided walk with information on the ecology and cultural history of the preserve. Learn More>>

1–3 pm: Drop into the Welcome Center to discover Ethel Untermyer’s inspiring legacy through hands-on nature activities and learn how you can make a difference for your Forest Preserves.

This event will be held rain or shine. Light refreshments and snacks provided.

Ryerson Conservation Area: Designated as an Illinois Nature Preserve, Ryerson Conservation Area contains some of Illinois' most pristine woodlands and provides habitat for several state-threatened and -endangered species. It is home to one of the state's best examples of a northern flatwoods forest—a rare northern Illinois ecosystem—as well as much of the remaining floodplain forest in northeastern Illinois.

OGFN: The Old-Growth Forest Network is a nonprofit organization working to connect people with nature by creating a national network of protected, publicly-accessible forests and people to protect them. OGFN also educates about the extraordinary ecological and human wellness benefits of mature and old-growth forests and speaks out regarding immediate threats to specific forests.
