How AI and Animal Sounds Advance Conservation

Better technology isn't the answer to every problem, but advances in recording equipment and AI are proving critical to biodiversity conservation. Dr. Connor Wood will share his journey from the Forest Preserves' "Knee-High Naturalists" program to a career in wildlife conservation, and how emerging technology is answering previously unanswerable questions in ecology. Case studies include the spotted owl, historically large wildfires, a toad that lives in California's highest mountains, and the tropics of Central and South America.
Dr. Connor Wood is a research faculty member of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. His work focuses on biodiversity conservation using large-scale acoustic monitoring and population statistics to understand how endangered species and whole communities are responding to environmental change. He grew up in Lincolnshire, about a mile from Ryerson Conservation Area.
