Profiles in Excellence
Join us for an inspiring afternoon in honor of black history at the 34th annual Profiles in Excellence. This year's theme is "Celebrating Champions––A Tribute to African-American Athletes."
African-American track and field stars Kimberly Atwater and her brother Terry Atwater, who both grew up in North Chicago, will talk about their high school experiences with athletics and academics. Kimberly is a four-time Illinois High School Association (IHSA) state qualifier in track and field during the 1980s, winning the girls 1985 state championship in long jump. Terry also qualified for multiple IHSA state meets. He attended Western Michigan University on an athletic and academic scholarship.
The event also will honor two local youth sports programs: the North Chicago Flames Youth Football and the Waukegan Invaders Track and Field Team. The sports photography of Walter Payton will be on display. Community church choirs will perform, and there will be a historical presentation on African-American athletes in Lake County and the Olympics.
