Join us to celebrate northern Illinois first designated old growth forest at Independence Grove in Libertyville!

The Old-Growth Forest Network (OGFN), a national nonprofit, designated St. Francis Woods as northern Illinois first designated old-growth forest. The forest is part of Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville and is one of the highest-quality oak woodlands in Lake County. It features several oaks that are more than 250 years old. OGFN’s mission is to inform the public about the importance of old-growth forests and inspire people to protect those that remain in the U.S.

This FREE event will include a guided walk with information on the ecology and cultural history of the site, and remarks from OGFN and Forest Preserves leadership. Event will be held rain or shine.

The event will take place at the trailhead near the parking lot at the North Bay Pavilion.
