Volunteer

Visitor Engagement Volunteer

A visitor engagement volunteer works directly with the public and visitors at the Museum. They work closely with the visitor services staff and education staff to ensure a positive and engaging experience for all who come to the Museum.

Examples of duties and responsibilities

  • Greet visitors and welcome them to the Museum.
  • Assist visitors in understanding the layout of the Museum and facilities.
  • Give clear directions and provide information about events happening throughout the Museum.
  • Provide assistance to the visitor services staff by helping to take Museum tickets and provide backup support at the front desk.
  • Help answer phones.
  • Assist education staff with public programs, school programs, guided tours, and more.
  • Conduct demonstrations related to the exhibits to engage visitors.
  • Collect and report visitor questions and suggested improvements.
  • Lead activities or tours for school children or families, with training.
  • Help conduct surveys on exhibits and public programs.

Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Maintain professional appearance and wear a uniform and/or nametag when working with the public.
  • Maintain a calm, pleasant, and cheerful demeanor.
  • Listen and be able to communicate with people of diverse background and age levels.
  • Be dependable and punctual.
  • Be self-directed and willing to take initiative.
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Able to speak in public and respond to customer inquiries.
  • Love of local history.
  • Cooperative nature, including the ability to take direction from staff.
  • Commit to at least 20 hours during the year.
  • Experience working with computers, as scheduling and recording volunteer hours is done on-line.
  • Visitor Engagement Volunteers are not required to do any heavy lifting.

Training and Other Requirements

  • Volunteer orientation with the Museum volunteer coordinator.
  • Attendance at appropriate workshops and training sessions for special skills and areas of interest. Some tasks may require more training than others.
  • Wearing of a uniform and/or nametag when working with the public.
  • An understanding and commitment to the safety precautions set forth in the Volunteer Handbook.
