Annual summer programs have a new look, but will continue to provide lifelong connections and memories, according to educators at the Lake County Forest Preserves.

"In 2022, we're offering a variety of hands-on nature, history and conservation education programs for children and teenagers ages 4-16. Programs range from consecutive 3-day and 5-day options, to program series where you can choose to attend some or all sessions, to programs you can experience with your child," said Director of Education Nan Buckardt. "Talented educators prioritize safety, inclusion and experiential learning in all Summer Adventures programs."

"The programs, each with a history or nature component, are designed to inspire and develop critical thinking skills," said Education Manager Alyssa Firkus. "The programs provide time for team building, exploration and play."

A wide variety of topics allow participants to explore everything from gardening to historic sites to discovering nature while canoeing. Many new adventures have been added, including the Nature at Night series. This program allows children ages 6-12 to explore nature during the evening with an adult. An environmental educator will lead the programs that take place at various forest preserves.  Fort Sheridan Expeditions is another new series taking place this summer. "Fort Sheridan is a fascinating place full of natural and cultural history," Firkus said. "These programs will involve hands-on activities while exploring various aspects of the forest preserve including activities along the lakeshore, ravine revelations and biking through human history."

"The programs provide something for everyone," Buckardt said. For example, Prehistoric Exploration programs include Ice Age mammals, dinosaurs, fossils and more. Wander and Wonder sessions involve exploring a different forest preserve on various days and using imagination to create your own habitat.
