Evening Woodcock Walk

Step out at dusk to watch the spectacular sky dance of the American woodcock. One of Lake County’s spring wonders, learn about this peculiar-looking bird and its marvelous tactics to win over a mate.

One of the earliest signs of spring is the American woodcock’s mating dance. Woodcocks are reclusive, ground-dwelling birds related to the sandpiper. For a brief period in the spring at dusk and dawn, males can be observed taking off into the sky with a song and dance that is sure to impress.
