Dunn Museum Hosts Alex Ross Signing Event

Headshot Image of Alex Ross

Comic book artist Alex Ross will take part in a rare signing event at the Dunn Museum, 1899 W. Winchester Road in Libertyville, Illinois, on Saturday, March 9, from 2–5 pm. The public appearance––the only scheduled signing in the Chicago area in 2019––marks the opening of his exhibition, Marvelocity: The Art of Alex Ross, on display March 9 through September 8.

Considered one of the greatest artists in the field of comic books, Ross has created some of the most iconic images known to fans today. For nearly 30 years, he has revitalized classic superheroes into works of fine art by illustrating characters including Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, the Avengers, Storm, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and many more.

“The Dunn Museum is honored to have Alex Ross here for his first museum exhibition in the Chicago metropolitan area," said Andrew Osborne, superintendent of educational facilities for the Lake County Forest Preserves, which operates the Dunn Museum.

For the signing event, visitors will be seen by Alex Ross on a first-come, first-served basis. Ross will sign up to five items per person. Exclusive posters, his Marvelocity book, and a variety of other merchandise will be available for purchase at the Dunn Museum gift shop during the event. Selfies can be taken with the artist, as time allows. Ross will not review portfolios or sketches.

A variety of other activities will take place at the exhibition's opening day, including creating a superhero mask, testing out your superpowers and tours of the exhibit. The Museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm.

Ross' signing event and other exhibition opening day activities are free with Museum admission: $6 for adults; $3 for seniors; $3 for youth ages 4–17; free for children ages 3 and under. The first 100 people to arrive at the exhibit will be admitted free through support provided by presenting sponsor, the Preservation Foundation of the Lake County Forest Preserves.

Ross, often referred to as the "Norman Rockwell of comics," started his craft at a young age. Dunn Museum visitors and Ross fans will experience a mini-documentary focusing on his work at all stages of his life. The gallery will include both 2D and 3D work featuring some of Marvels greatest heroes and villains. Approximately 75 original works created by Ross will be on display. They are on loan from his personal collection.

"Marvelocity" is his latest release, a curated collection of his best Marvel works over his career. The book, which includes painted pages, covers, childhood artwork, and never-before-seen art, reunites Ross with author Chip Kidd and photographer Geoff Spear, who worked with Ross on a 2003 book, "Mythology," a collection of his best works for DC Comics.

Ross resides in the Chicago area and is a graduate of the American Academy of Art in Chicago. The Dunn Museum is nationally accredited––a distinction held by only 3 percent of American museums.
