The District conducts counts of deer annually during the winter to estimate abundance of deer in District preserves. During the winter when a minimum of 4” of snow is covering the ground, the District conducts aerial surveys using the double-observer method (2 observers both counting from the same side of the helicopter to verify each other’s counts) flying transects approximately 300’-wide at an average speed of 20 miles per hour and an altitude of 500–800’. Transects are flown parallel to each other and continued until the entire site is surveyed. Surveys are typically conducted at ~20-30 sites which vary in size from 20–2700 acres. The District typically schedules ~20 hours of flight time over 5-7 days between mid-December and late March.
