As Director, John Tannahill is responsible for the safety and security of preserve properties, staff, and patrons. He regularly assists other internal departments, and partners with various levels of fire and police departments and conservation organizations to address safety-related issues.

Along with his current title, Tannahill also serves as Chief of Ranger Police. He received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s in both leadership studies and criminal justice management and leadership. In addition, he graduated from the Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command and the Northwestern Executive Management Programs.

Tannahill served as an E-6 staff sergeant for the U.S. Army Military Police Corp from 1978 to 1982, and worked for 25 years with the Westmont Police Department serving various functions including patrol, investigations, tactical officer, sergeant and administrative aide to the chief.

Tannahill is certified with the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and was elected in 2016 to head the Lake County Chiefs of Police Association. He would like the public to know that preserves are safe, and that Ranger Police maintain a low crime rate through partnerships with staff and other police and fire departments and with the help of proactive preserve neighbors and patrons.
