Although DNA testing is the only way to tell with complete and absolute certainty what mushroom you have found, in this class you will learn the basics of mushroom identification. In addition to becoming more familiar with the major mushroom groups from a morphological standpoint, you will also learn the basic characteristics of fungi including cap and stipe features, how to use a key, make a spore print and more!

Wild mushrooms are something guest speaker Hunter Le Duc has been interested in since her first foray as a little girl. She was always fascinated by how unusual and diverse the mushrooms were that her father, one of the founding members of the Illinois Mycological Association, would bring home and present to her mother to cook. As a young adult, the culinary pull of mushrooms drew her back in and once again awakened her to the seemingly endless diversity of mushrooms in northern Illinois and the rest of the world. In addition to being a member of a handful of Mycological Societies, Hunter is certified as a Wild Mushroom Expert by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

FREE but must register to attend.

Enjoy free programs every first and third Thursday evening. Engage in hands-on programs and expand your curiosity.
