7 Things To Do At The Forest Preserves in September

With fall approaching, the Lake County Forest Preserves has a variety of activities planned. Here are a few options for September. 

1. "Hands-On Family Tour," takes place 5:30–6:30 pm, Thursday, September 5, at the Dunn Museum in Libertyville. Travel through time on this interactive, hands-on sensory-based family tour of the exhibition galleries. This is the last free program before the closing of the exhibit, Marvelocity: The Art of Alex Ross. Enjoy free programs sponsored by USG on the first and third Thursdays of every month at the Dunn Museum. 

2. Learn about a variety of animal tails through a nature-based story and hands-on activities. Participants will make their own tail and go exploring outdoors, weather permitting. "Hikin' Tykes:Animal Tails" takes place 9:30–10:45 am, Tuesday, September 10, at Hastings Lake Forest Preserve, Shelter A, in Lake Villa. For children ages 2–4, with an adult. $6 for adults and $3 for children. Registration is required.

3. "Lunchtime Tours: Lake County Highlights" takes place 12–12:30 pm, Wednesday, September 11, and Thursday, September 26, at the Dunn Museum in Libertyville. Make the most of your lunchtime break learning about local history on themed 30-minute tours. $6 for adults and $3 for seniors. Registration is required.

4. Paddle into the 1740s with our 34-foot Montreal canoe and learn about Lake County's tie to the French fur trade. "Night Voyageur" runs from 6–8 pm, Saturday, September 14, at Van Patten Woods Forest Preserve in Wadsworth. Families with children ages 8 and up should meet at the boat launch lot. $10 for Lake County residents and $14 for nonresidents. Registration is required.

5. In honor of Archaeology Awareness Month, enjoy a lecture by Great Lakes archaeologist, Dan Melone, as he discusses the Native people of presettlement Chicago. "Chicagoland Prehistory" takes place from 6:30–7:30 pm, Wednesday, September 18, at the Dunn Museum in Libertyville. $6 for adults and $3 for seniors. Includes Museum admission. Registration required.

6. Learn about the Lake County Forest Preserves efforts to eliminate buckthorn. Experts will share tips for removing this invasive species and suggest great replacement plants. "Healthy Hedges," a free program, takes place 6–7 pm, Thursday, September 19, at the Dunn Museum in Libertyville. Enjoy free programs sponsored by USG on the first and third Thursdays of every month at the Dunn Museum.

7. "Beers, Brats and Birdies" takes place at 4:30 pm, Friday, September 20, at Countryside Golf Club in Mundelein. Must be 21 or older. Enjoy a 30-minute golf clinic followed by a round of 9 holes, with beer tastings and bratwurst. Cost is $49 a player. Registration is required.
