With summer winding down, the Lake County Forest Preserves has a variety of activities planned. Here are a few options for August.

  1. "Meet the Authors of Marvelocity: Alex Ross and Chip Kidd," takes place from 1–4 pm, Saturday, August 10, at the Dunn Museum in Libertyville. In their book Marvelocity, Ross and Kidd bring to life beloved Marvel Universe comic characters. They tell the stories of the superheroes that live in this universe and of a boy who wanted to illustrate them. Meet both authors at this unique book signing. Free with Museum admission: $6 adults; $3 seniors; $3 youth ages 4–17; free for children 3 and under. No registration required.

  2. Discover the secret lives of monarch butterflies through hands-on activities and a guided walk. The free event, for families with children under 12, takes place from 10–11 am Wednesday, August 14, at Ryerson Woods Welcome Center in Riverwoods. No registration is required.

  3. Participants will have a rare opportunity to explore nature after dark during the "Full Moon Hike" from 7:30–9 pm, Thursday, August 15, at Pine Dunes Forest Preserve in Antioch. Walk the 2.2-mile trail as the sun sets and the full moon rises. Lightweight, long pants and long-sleeve shirts are recommended. Meet at the Hunt Club Road parking lot. Cost is $5 for Lake County residents and $7 for nonresidents. Registration is required for the program for adults.

  4. "Kids Nature Funfest" runs from 1–4 pm, Sunday, August 18, at Greenbelt Cultural Center in North Chicago. Engage in pond scooping and critter exploration, nature play, art, crafts and live animals. Numerous community partners will share nature activities and crafts at the free event.

  5. A "Woodpecker Walk" takes place from 8:30–10 am Tuesday, August 20, at Fort Sheridan in Lake Forest. Learn about the different species of woodpeckers that call Lake County home, then walk the trail to see how many you can find. For adults and families with children ages 6 and up. $2 for Lake County residents and $4 for nonresidents. Registration is required.

  6. "From Seed to Sprout: Food Preservation Then and Now" takes place from 10–11 am, Wednesday, August 21, at Bonner Heritage Farm in Lindenhurst. How do the seasons of the year impact our food? Learn more about farm life in the 1800s and food preservation then and now. For children ages 3–10, with an adult. $3 residents, $5 nonresidents. Registration required.

  7. "Bess Bower Dunn Day" runs 10 am–5 pm, Friday, August 23, at the Dunn Museum in Libertyville. Celebrate Bess Bower Dunn's birthday with free admission and special activities throughout the day. Learn about Bess' life, make crafts in the North Shore Gas Education Classroom, and join a guided tour of Museum highlights.
