Dog Sled Area

The Dog Sledding Area is the only one of its kind in the Chicago metropolitan area. It is designed as a training facility for mushing, competitive dog sledding and skijoring (where a cross-country skier is pulled over snow by dogs). A wide-tracked two-mile trail runs along the exterior of the preserve and connects to a one-mile interior loop trail. The trails are routed to provide a number of decision points for training teams to respond to direction commands.

Permits are required for sled teams and skijorers. In the warmer months, and when winter conditions are not good for dog sledding, hikers also can enjoy the mowed trails, but must yield the right of way to dog teams using warm-weather wheeled carts.

Location
The Dog Sledding Area is located in northeast Lake County near Waukegan.
The entrance and parking area are located on Yorkhouse Road west of Delany Road.

The Natural Scene
The Dog Sledding Area offers visitors an open, rolling grass field. It is part of the larger Waukegan Savanna Forest Preserve.
