The Dog Sledding Area is the only one of its kind in the Chicago metropolitan area. It is designed as a training facility for mushing, competitive dog sledding and skijoring (where a cross-country skier is pulled over snow by dogs). A wide-tracked two-mile trail runs along the exterior of the preserve and connects to a one-mile interior loop trail. The trails are routed to provide a number of decision points for training teams to respond to direction commands.
Permits are required for sled teams and skijorers. In the warmer months, and when winter conditions are not good for dog sledding, hikers also can enjoy the mowed trails, but must yield the right of way to dog teams using warm-weather wheeled carts. |
