More About This Preserve

The Natural Scene

In the early 1990s, a number of community groups joined us to formulate a plan to restore rare and valuable wetlands at the slough. With the help of hundreds of volunteers ranging from school children to seniors, we’ve restored an old agricultural field to habitat for native species. Hundreds of volunteers have planted more than 61,000 plants to provide habitat for birds, frogs, turtles and other animals.

History

In the early 1970s, the Lake County Forest Preserves moved to save 150 acres of land north of Old Mill Road. Additional land was purchased between 1976 and 1979.

Location

The entrance is on Half Day Road (Route 22) east of Waukegan Road (Route 43).

The separate Off-Leash Dog Area entrance is on Waukegan Road (Route 43) south of Old Mill Road and north of Half Day Road (Route 22). An annual or daily permit and a dog are required for use.
