Since 1958 we have been preserving and restoring land and offering fun, wholesome ways for you to celebrate, relax and learn in forest preserves throughout Lake County. Today we protect more than 30,000 acres and are the second largest Forest Preserve District in the state of Illinois.
Our Mission
To preserve a dynamic and unique system of natural and cultural resources and to develop innovative educational, recreational and cultural opportunities of regional value, while exercising environmental and fiscal responsibility.

Governing Board
The state law governing Forest Preserve Districts provides that when a District's boundaries are contiguous with those of the county, the County Board members also serve as Forest Preserve Commissioners. The same people who serve on the County of Lake Board also serve on the Forest Preserve Board. All Forest Preserve Board and Committee meetings are open to the public.

Budget and Tax Rate Summary
We receive most of our funding through property taxes. Fees, other charges, grants, gifts and donations make up the balance of the budget.
Our golf courses are operated as enterprise funds. Golf course revenues cover operating, maintenance and development costs for those facilities.
