Celebrate American Archives Month at the Lake County Discovery Museum by taking a tour of the Archives Building on Thursday, October 15, at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. Tours are free, but reservations are required. Call the Archives at 847-968-3381 to make a reservation.
Tours will begin in the Museum’s library, and then continue with a behind-the-scenes look at the Curt Teich Postcard Archives and the Lake County History Archives. The Museum Library, named the 2008 Library of the Year by the North Suburban Library System, houses books and periodicals on postcard history, collecting, and appraisal, as well as books on Lake County history, towns, Native Americans, census records, and historic plat maps (1861-2000).
The Curt Teich Postcard Archives is the nation’s largest public collection of postcards and related materials.
Postcards in the collection date from 1893 to the present and cover cities and towns throughout North America and more than 80 other countries. Tour participants will learn the history of the Curt Teich Company of Chicago, discover the vast array of subject matter that was printed on postcards, and see how postcards were created.
The Lake County History Archives provides access to documents and photographs featuring the history and development of Lake County, Illinois.
Tour participants will see Lake County archival treasures, including rare photographs and glass lantern slides relating to the production and promotion of movies from the 1890s to 1920s; portions of the Civil War Collection including letters home from soldiers on the front; and the sketch book of accomplished 1930s local artist Reima Ratti. These special collections are available to the general public for research.
American Archives Month is a collaborative effort by professional organizations and repositories around the nation to highlight the importance of records of enduring value. The purpose of Archives Month is to celebrate and promote the rich documentary heritage of Illinois, increase public awareness of archival materials and repositories, strengthen ties with regular archives users, and introduce new users to the wealth of materials available.
