Purchase a rain barrel and do your part to conserve water. In return, get the personal benefit of savings on your water bill. Use your rain barrel to collect and store rain water from your roof that would otherwise be diverted to gutters and your lawn. Save this rainwater and use it for household needs such as watering your lawn, cleaning windows, washing your car, or even washing your hair. By using a rain barrel, you have an instant source of naturally softened water that is chlorine-free, calcium-free, and lime-free. You also save money on your water bill.
As part of a cooperative effort, the Lake County Soil and Water Conservation District, Lake County Stormwater Management Commission, and Lake County Forest Preserves are offering 55-gallon rain barrels available in two colors: terra cotta or grey. Cost is $79 each.
Purchase your rain barrel online at http://www.LCFPD.org/rainbarrels or call 847-968-3321.
Rain barrels are available by prepaid order only. The rain barrel comes with a screw-on, perforated screened lid and each rain barrel has a spigot, linking fitting at bottom end and overflow fitting near top. Linking hoses, pedestal riser, and flex elbows can be purchased separately. The hoses can be used to connect multiple rain barrels together or to divert water to a garden or flower bed.
Deadline for all orders is Wednesday, April 29. Purchased rain barrels can be picked up at the Lake County Fairgrounds on Fri., May 15, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; and on Sat., May 16, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. only.
How much water can you save? One inch of rain on a 1,000 square foot roof yields 632 gallons of water. Calculate the entire yield of your roof by multiplying the square footage of your roof by 623 and divide by 1000. This saved water makes a difference towards cleaner lakes, streams and rivers, and locally, this saved water makes a difference towards reducing strain on municipal water and sewer facilities which in turn decreases the need for expanding these municipal facilities. Even more locally, you’ll reap savings on your water bill and have a pure, natural back-up water source.
