Hike Lake County 2009

Families, scout groups, high school students, fitness clubs, retirees and even dogs are hiking Lake County to earn rewards. This popular program encourages participants to hike trails at seven Lake County Forest Preserves to earn a commemorative shield for their hiking stick. Each year features new trails and a colorful new shield. Add to your collection each year and fill your hiking stick with colorful reminders of hikes in your Lake County Forest Preserves.

Burnham Centennial 100-Mile Challenge

In honor of David Burnham, we invite you to step up to a special anniversary version of our Hike Lake County program. Take the challenge and hike, bike or ride (on horseback) 100 miles on a combination of any Lake County trails between June 1 and November 30.

How it works:

  1. Get a Travel Log
Every hiker needs their own Travel Log. Pick one up at a Hike Lake County center or download one here.
Download the Burnham Centennial 100-Mile Challenge mileage chart.
  2. Choose seven out of 12 trails
Beginning August 15, each designated Hike Lake County trail will be marked with a sign bearing the Hike Lake County logo. All are clean, safe and scenic. Most are also wheelchair accessible.
  3. Hike all seven between August 15 and November 30
Of course, you’re welcome to hike all 12 if you’re especially ambitious. Record each hike in your Travel Log with the date and your initials. Biking or horseback riding does not count toward this part of the program.

For the Burnham Centennial 100-Mile Challenge begin your hike on June 1 and enjoy it until November 30.
  4. Submit your Travel Log by January 31 to receive your shield

    • In person: Bring your Log to any Hike Lake County center by January 31, 2010.
    • By mail: Send your completed Log to Lake County Forest Preserves, 2000 N. Milwaukee Avenue, Libertyville, IL 60048. Please note if you’d like your Log returned when we send your shield.
    • Online: Send us your hiking information and comments using this form. We'll send your shield to you through the mail.
  5. Let your dog join in the fun
You can buy a Hike Lake County collar for your dog before you start the program (optional). Then take your dog along with you on the seven trails. Record your dog’s name in the Travel Log next to your initials. When you turn in your Log, your canine friend will receive their own commemorative dog tag (up to three dogs).
