Civil War Days at the Lakewood Forest Preserve, July 11th and 12th, 2009

The Largest Civil War Reenactment in Illinois!
The Lake County Discovery Museum is proud to present the 18th annual Civil War Days encampment in 2009. The event features infantry, cavalry and artillery reenactors, as well as musicians, sutlers, medical personnel and civilians. Ongoing drills, activities, and Civil War era shopping are available both days.


Living History Day | July 11, 11 am - 4 pm
Wander through civilian camps and Civil War shops to see blacksmiths, quilters, tinsmiths and other historical figures from that era. Experience a soldier's life with reenactments of pay day, weapon checks, drills and mail call. Listen to the songs and stories of Harriet Tubman or a compelling address by President and Mrs. Lincoln. Meet Generals Custer, Lee, Grant, Jackson and Sherman. Visit a recreation of the 1863 Summer Agricultural Fair.

The Big Battle | July 12, 9 am - 3 pm
On Sunday, civilian camps and sutler's shops remain open as units prepare for the narrated battle. Artillery, infantry, cavalry and medical units all contribute to this large-scale living history demonstration. Arrive by 12:30 pm to secure a good viewing spots for the narrated battle, which starts at 1:30 pm. Presentations by Sojourner Truth, President and Mrs. Lincoln, and Civil War era generals round out the day.

Event admission: $8 adults, $4 youth (ages 4-17) per person per day, includes Museum admission and parking.
