Lake County Postcard Collection
|
|
In addition to the postcard collections of the Curt Teich Postcard Archives, the Lake County History Archives has more than 1,600 postcard views of Lake County. The collection mainly covers the years 1900 -1960, and the majority of the postcards are real photos. This collection includes views of the former U.S. Army base at Fort Sheridan (1887-1993), resorts in the Chain O' Lakes region, and street views of over 30 towns.

The photographic collection includes views of the former U.S. Army base at Fort Sheridan (1887-1993), the Ray Family resort on Diamond Lake (ca. 1900 -1950), agriculture, businesses, county courthouse, schoolhouses, residences, and individuals.

Civil War (1861-1865) Collection
|
|
The bulk of the collection relates to the 96th Illinois Regimental Volunteers. It includes documents from Company B (military orders, clothing and equipment inventories, letters requesting furlough, and discharge certificates); letters of Orson Young (Company D); and letters of the Minto Family of Millburn (Companies C and D). Also available are history books on the 96th and the Adjutant Generals Reports of Illinois 1861-1865.

Early Motion Picture Industry Collection
|
|
Lake County played a key role in the early development of the motion picture industry. Edward Amet (1860-1948) of Waukegan was the inventor of the first practical 35mm motion picture projector - the Amet Magniscope. Collection includes a Magniscope (on display in the Museum gallery), photographs, movie stills, copies of patents, news clippings and researched articles on Amet and Essanay Studios in Chicago.

Booker T. Washington Club Collection
|
|
The Booker T. Washington Club of Zion (1936-1982) was a social and civic organization for minorities, but welcomed people "young and old, Black and White." The collection includes a photo album/scrapbook from the Club and news clippings on African-American heritage in Lake County.

School Collection
|
|
This collection consists of township school records including finances and minutes of school board meetings from 1841-1962; 52 one-room school histories written by students in 1918; and photos of schools and students.

|
The Archives' Library features a section on Lake County history including books on local communities, Native Americans, census records and historic plat maps from 1861 to 1989 showing land ownership.
