A resolution awarding a contract for construction of public access improvements within Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve was approved at the May 9, 2017, meeting of the Lake County Forest Preserve District Board of Commissioners. The contract, in the amount of $1,872,000.00, was awarded to V3 Construction Group, Woodridge, Illinois.

As part of the approved 2015 Master Plan for Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve, the improvements include: a new redesigned entrance drive on Gilgare Lane; a new 45-car paved parking lot with an evaporator toilet; trailhead improvements at the north parking lot (adjacent the Fort Sheridan Cemetery) with an evaporator toilet; accessibility improvements to the existing Hutchinson Ravine Trail; drainage improvements to the existing 1.6-mile grass trail loop; and, timber boardwalks and scenic overlooks. Hutchinson Trail will become an accessible trail from Sheridan Road all the way to the new lake overlook, by adding two new boardwalks and converting the woodchip section to asphalt. Three scenic observation areas will be added, featuring new and relocated interpretive panels. The Janes Ravine Bridge will be enhanced to maximize its years of useful service.

The Forest Preserve Planning Committee and Board reviewed the bid proposals in early May 2017. Portions of the preserve will close on May 30, 2017, so construction can begin in early June. During construction, all portions of the preserve north of Fort Sheridan’s historic district will be closed to public access. View closure map

The length of site closure will vary based on the nature of the work. Please visit www.LCFPD.org/projects for additional information on the improvements, site closure status, and project updates and maps.

Forest Preserve President Ann B. Maine said, “We are excited to actually begin construction on these improvements, which will greatly enhance public access to the preserve. Fort Sheridan is a beloved location for its history and its natural beauty. When the improvements are completed, the public will be able to enjoy the sweeping vista from the bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, one of the natural wonders of the world, walk along the lakeshore itself, and experience both meadow and ravine habitats. These are significant improvements at one of our most treasured open spaces.”
