The Mischievous Art of Jim Flora

The Lake County Discovery Museum is proud to present The Mischievous Art of Jim Flora, on display from April 5 through August 31, 2008. This special exhibition will feature Jim Flora’s original paintings, fine art prints, woodcut relief prints, record covers, music ephemera, and rare artifacts.

Considered a pioneer of record cover illustration, Jim Flora’s bizarre figures dominated jazz albums for Columbia and RCA Victor during the 1940s and '50s in a style both playful and sinister. In addition, Flora worked as a commercial artist, illustrating for children’s books, magazine covers and interiors, sales literature, advertisements and newspaper graphics. He was also a fine artist of twisted, diabolic intent. Flora created paintings, illustrations, woodcuts and prints until his death in July 1998. His art influenced numerous contemporary illustrators, including J.D. King, Tim Biskup, Lane Smith and Shag.
