Terms of Agreement

For everyone's safety and enjoyment, please adhere to the following rules, regulations and restrictions. Violation may result in a fine/suspension of permit use. For questions or a complete list of rules, you can view all ordinances governing the use of preserves and trails, or call 847-549-5200 and ask to speak to a Ranger.

  • I recognize and acknowledge that there are risks of physical injury to me and my horse when riding on forest preserve trails.
  • I agree and hereby waive, relinquish and hold the Lake County Forest Preserves, its commissioners, officers, agents, servants and employees harmless of any and all claims which may incur by reason of damage to my person or property as well as all claims of third parties incurred by reason of damage to person or property resulting from personal equestrian activity.

Rules and Regulations
  • It shall be unlawful within the Forest Preserves for any person:
    • to treat a horse cruelly or knowingly permit such treatment
    • to drive or lead a horse that is vicious, unmanageable or physically unfit
    • to drive a horse in such a manner as to injure or endanger the person or property of the Forest Preserve District
    • to drive a horse-drawn vehicle that is not adequately and safely equipped for driving
    • to possess or consume alcoholic beverages on any trail
    • to race
  • Pony or horse-drawn vehicles only. Other draft animals are not permitted.
  • Horses must be hitched or on lead at all times. Do not release your horse to pasture at this site.
  • No more than two horses pulling one cart or sleigh.
  • Stay on designated trails.
  • Horse-drawn vehicles are required to yield to all other trail users.
  • Pass only when necessary. Announce passing by calling "TRAIL!" Pass on the left.
  • Privately owned animals and vehicles only. Permit is not valid for animals for hire.
