Nippersink, 8.2-acre addition

Purchase Date: December 23, 2002
Purchase Price: $94,046
Number of Acres: 8.2

This 8.2-acre addition to Nippersink near Round Lake expands this Forest Preserve to 227 acres.

The addition offers greater protection for valuable wetlands and for endangered and threatened species associated with Nippersink. The new land has extensive high quality Advanced Identification (ADID) wetlands that are directly connected to Nippersink Forest Preserve. The site's wetlands, marsh vegetation and open water ponds, combined with the uplands and oak-hickory woodlands, offer an excellent blend of landscapes ideal for increasing and protecting the site's bird population.

The addition to Nippersink is also listed on the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory, which identifies rare communities, rare species and high quality natural areas statewide that are in need of protection. Five threatened and endangered species have so far been identified, including the Beaked Sedge (T), the Pied-Billed Grebe (T), the Common Moorhen (T), the Black Tern (E) and the Yellow-headed Blackbird (E).
