Ethel's Woods, 475.5-acre new Preserve

Purchase Date: June 22, 2001
Purchase Price: $13,344,735
Number of Acres: 475.5

While standing near the largest remaining unprotected woodland in Lake County, the Lake County Forest Preserve Board of Commissioners officially named this new preserve Ethel’s Woods in honor of the District’s founder, Ethel Untermyer of Riverwoods.

The new Preserve is located south of Route 173 between Route 45 and Crawford Road in Antioch and Newport Townships. One of the most unique features of this new Preserve is the 170-acre unprotected oak-hickory woodland that’s dominated by century-old burr oak, white oak, shagbark hickory and black walnut trees.  A 60-acre serpentine-shaped lake offers a picturesque landscape reminiscent of a northwoods setting.
