This Forest Preserve in northwest Lake County near Antioch was created through purchase of two adjacent properties.
The larger of the two parcels was previously known as Raven Glen Farm, and is located along the west side of Route 45 south of Route 173. Raven Glen Farm features gently rolling hills and woodlands, and allows for the restoration of prairie and savanna areas. The site also contains nine high-quality wetlands. The farm was once considered state-of-the-art for dairy production during the 1950s and 1960s. It preserves several high-quality wetlands and woodlands and protects nearly 95 percent of 33-acre Timber Lake. With a sandy base, the supports two state listed fish: the Iowa Darter and the Black Chin Shiner.
The smaller Timber Lake property, located on the west side of Route 45 just south of Route 173, was used as a campground. It will help protect wetlands and has a gently rolling landscape including mature oak and hickory woodlands.
These new land buys could become a choice outdoor recreation spot for fishing, picnicking and nature exploration. |
